What Engagement Rings Are Asked For
Every other page here counts what someone paid. These 7,492 lines are what was quoted instead: shop listings, trade and wholesale prices, prices per carat, and the changes buyers watched year to year. The median ring listed at $1,500, below the $2,250 buyers reported paying. Asking prices and paid prices are not the same number, which is why nothing here is counted in any median elsewhere on the site.

Tax, tariffs and importing
33 questions here are about duty, sales tax and carrying a ring across a border: costs that change the price without changing the ring.
Is it cheaper to import an unheated sapphire than buy locally in Australia?
Buyers say yes - a 1.93ct GIA-origin unheated Ceylon sapphire landed in Australia for about $9,596 AUD including 10% GST, versus local Australian jewelers quoting around $12,000-14,000 USD for a similar-size stone or bespoke ring.
Are there import taxes when buying a custom ring from an overseas company like Jann Paul?
The buyer, based in California, was billed an extra 9.5% import/use tax on the ring's sale price by the California tax authority after the ring cleared US customs from Singapore.
Does VAT change what a diamond actually costs?
The buyer's home country added a 25% VAT on top of the diamond's base price, turning a $2,837 pre-tax quote into $3,446 after tax, and he noted the tax applies to all goods sold there, not just diamonds.
Does gold jewelry pricing mainly track tariffs?
One buyer said gold prices were already rising well before any tariff talk, driven by broader market factors rather than tariffs specifically.
How are 2025 tariffs affecting diamond prices?
A 10% US tariff on Indian natural-diamond imports (after a higher 27% rate was paused) plus tariffs on Chinese-made lab diamonds are raising costs and creating supply uncertainty for both categories.
Should I buy jewelry now before tariffs push gold prices even higher?
Buyers note gold jumped from under $2,000 an ounce in 2020 to nearly $3,700 by early September 2025, including about a $200 rise in roughly a week, and several US jewelry brands warned they would raise gold jewelry prices on October 1 because of tariffs, so many buyers were rushing to buy before then.
Do you have to pay tariffs or customs fees on a ring shipped from india
One buyer of a $40 Etsy moissanite ring from India paid no shipping or tariff charges, with the ring taking about a month door to door.
How have diamond import tariffs affected prices recently?
One buyer reports Indian import tariffs on diamonds dropped from a January 2026 high of 50% down to 10%, which is starting to lower new inventory prices.
Is 'no heat' treatment important for a padparadscha sapphire's value?
INSIGHT: buyers were especially impressed that this padparadscha was natural with no heat treatment, treating it as a major value driver alongside its rare color.
Is $2,200 CAD a fair price for a loose 3-year-old diamond?
A jeweler here thinks it's a bit high, estimating the same stone is worth closer to $1,600-1,700 CAD including tax at current internet-retail prices, though the buyer says it was still the best of five quotes received.
Do you have to pay customs duty on a diamond shipped from overseas to Canada?
One buyer reported paying about $40 CAD in duty on roughly a $1,000 USD parcel value for a diamond shipped into Canada.
Is it worth importing a diamond directly from Alibaba to save money?
One buyer said a friend got a 3-carat GIA-certified lab diamond from Alibaba for about $600 and had it mounted locally in Toronto for about $2,500, calling it a legitimate and much cheaper route than buying pre-set.
Questions about asking prices
Is the asking price what people pay for an engagement ring?

A quoted price is what someone was asked for, or what they saw a ring offered at. It is never counted as a purchase: every median on the rest of this site comes only from buyers reporting what they themselves paid.
