Three Months' Salary? What 408 Buyers Really Spent Against Their Income
The median engagement ring cost 4.5% of a year's income among 408 buyers who gave both figures, about two weeks' pay. Only nine of them spent more than three months' income, the rule of thumb that diamond advertising made famous. The share falls as income rises: buyers earning under $50,000 put a median 4.6% of a year's income into the ring ($1,750), buyers earning $250,000 and up 1.6% ($6,000).
How much of a year's income the ring took
43% of these buyers spent under 4% of a year's income, and 2% spent more than three months' worth.

Questions about salary and ring budgets
Do people really spend three months' salary on an engagement ring?
Almost nobody here did: nine of 408 buyers who gave both their income and the ring's price spent more than three months' income. The median ring cost 4.5% of a year's income, about two weeks' pay.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring based on salary?
No rule fits the buyers here. Half spent under 4.5% of a year's income, and 11% spent more than two months' income. Buyers on higher incomes spent more in dollars but a smaller share.

The share is the ring's price over the yearly income the buyer stated, or the share they named themselves ("two weeks' pay" is 3.8%, "two months' salary" 16.7%). A monthly income was counted as twelve months. Couples who named a household income are counted on that income.
